Kenosha, WI (ZIP 53142), has earned a spot on the Realtor.com® 2025 Hottest ZIP Codes list, ranking among the nation’s top 25 markets.
Positioned along Lake Michigan between Milwaukee and Chicago, Kenosha offers suburban affordability, commuter convenience, and a mix of small-city amenities that buyers are increasingly seeking.
From January to June 2025, Kenosha listings drew 2.9 times more views per property than the typical U.S. listing and sold in a median of 29 days. The median listing price came in at $321,000, well below the national median of $440,000, underscoring why this Midwestern hub has become a magnet for value-driven buyers.
Lakeside affordability with metro access
Kenosha ranked No. 23 nationally, joining a strong lineup of Midwest communities on this year’s list. By comparison, Waukesha, WI homes (No. 14) had a median listing price of $341,000, while Wheaton, IL real estate (No. 12) posted $538,000. For buyers priced out of Chicago’s inner suburbs, Kenosha offers relative affordability without sacrificing access to two major metros.
The city’s location is a key driver of market demand. With commuter rail connections and highway access, residents can work in Milwaukee or Chicago while enjoying Kenosha’s lakeside living, revitalized downtown, and family-friendly neighborhoods.
Midwest markets leading the way
Kenosha also ranks among the Midwest’s hottest ZIPs, a region that continues to shine in the 2025 rankings. Ballwin, MO; Strongsville, OH; and Bexley, OH were among the top 10 nationally, while markets like Rockford, IL and Toledo, OH joined Kenosha in the broader Midwest top 10.
The Midwest’s strength is part of a larger national trend. For the third consecutive year, the South and West were absent from the top 10, while the Northeast and Midwest dominated the Realtor.com hottest zip code rankings. Limited inventory and steady housing market demand are keeping competition intense in these regions.
The value proposition in a high-rate market
Like other hot ZIPs, Kenosha embodies the formula of suburban affordability paired with urban proximity. Homes are priced below national norms while offering access to jobs, schools, and Lake Michigan’s recreational draw.
Realtor.com Chief Economist Danielle Hale notes that this year’s hottest ZIPs highlight a shift in buyer priorities. “These locations represent a sweet spot for shoppers who want suburban amenities and proximity to jobs without paying top-tier metro premiums.”
Nationally, buyers in these competitive markets skew older, more financially prepared, and well-positioned to act quickly. Incomes average $114,000 versus $79,000 nationally, with down payments ranging from $42,000 to $143,000 compared with the $30,000 U.S. norm. Credit scores also run higher at 759 versus 748. These stronger buyer profiles reflect the competitive nature of today’s hottest ZIPs, where homes sell faster and inventory remains nearly 59% below 2019 levels. Many are turning to a mortgage calculator to better plan offers in this high-rate environment.
Kenosha’s rise in 2025
Kenosha’s mix of affordability, location, and lakeside amenities positions it well in this environment. With homes selling quickly, buyers are finding that this Wisconsin market checks the boxes for both value and lifestyle.
Kenosha’s rise shows how the Midwest continues to shape the housing story in 2025. By blending suburban access, small-city vibrancy, and relative affordability, the city is drawing attention from home shoppers across the region—and standing out as one of Wisconsin’s hottest housing markets.
