Those yearning to live out their “Yellowstone” dreams—without the despair and drama—could make them come true with the stunning Heart Rock Ranch nestled in California’s Gold Rush Country.
The stunning 381.43-acre ranch, which sits in the wooded foothills of the Sierra Nevada, is now on the market for $5,900,000.
And, the property is full of picturesque proof that miners did, in fact, toil and dream big in the area.
The 3,720-square-foot lodge, for example, is built from timbers salvaged from the historic 1800s Nevada Pacific Railroad Station. Its 30-foot-high, hand-stacked rock fireplace is crafted from stones collected on-site.
That’s where the ranch’s eponymous “Heart Rock” can be found, prominently raised above the other stones.

More evidence of the gold miners’ presence is found in the wine cave, where artifacts such as pickaxes, shovel heads, antique bottles, sifting pans, and dishes are display.
The wine cave itself is nestled in a hillside, which could have conceivably been a mining tunnel.
The ranch’s gold rush history isn’t the only interesting chapter in Heart Rock Ranch’s illustrious past. The man who originally developed the property into a gentleman’s ranch was “the world’s No. 1 Kirby Vacuum salesman,” according to listing agent Todd Renfrew, of California Outdoor Properties.
“He taught himself how to drive heavy equipment, how to fell trees, mill them himself, make beams and trusses from the lumber, and built the cabin and garage with materials found on-site,” Renfrew tells Realtor.com®.
The current owners purchased the property in 2017 for $1,950,000, and modernized the house and cabin, among many other improvements.

The main lodge is now an American West design delight, with its three bespoke bedrooms and two tastefully appointed bathrooms. Heated flooring runs throughout the home.
The great room is like what you would find in a posh mountain or ski resort, with its towering gabled ceiling, beautiful wood paneling, and cozy dining and seating areas.
The dining table, which seats 20, is made from old live-edge wood that was harvested and milled on the ranch.
The kitchen is equipped with double islands, pro-level appliances, a double copper sink, and a spacious butler’s pantry.
Outside the main lodge are a wisteria-covered pergola with a fireplace, a deck with a fire pit, a serene waterfall, and a gentle brook.
The ranch also comes with a 750-square-foot cabin and a 900-square-foot studio apartment, making it an ideal retreat for a multigenerational family.

The property also makes an ideal hobby ranch. To accommodate livestock and the necessary equipment, there’s a covered tractor barn, small outbuildings, and sheds. The property is fenced and cross-fenced for cattle and horses.
“There are currently cattle on the ranch year-round, but the ranch has also supported other livestock over the years, including chickens, goats, and sheep. Zoning and space allow for continued livestock use,” says Renfrew.
“There are also 12 miles of private trails and roads ideal for horseback riding, hiking, hunting, or ATV exploration.”
The ranch is located at the confluence of Penobscot and Greenwood creeks and contains five wells, freshwater springs, and a year-round pond.
The ranch also offers six legal parcels and three additional build sites (one with existing septic, water, and electricity). It has a rare, state-approved permit to build a large off-stream pond—which took seven years to procure. Commercial use is not out of the question.
Although the Heart Rock Ranch, located in northern El Dorado County, might seem like it’s days away from civilization, the nearest international airport is only an hour away in Sacramento. Lake Tahoe, with all of its winter and summer attractions, is only 90 minutes away.
