For fans of midcentury modern design, few names carry as much weight as Joseph Eichler. And for those who understand his legacy, a Claude Oakland–designed Eichler home in the serene foothills of Thousand Oaks, CA, is the real estate equivalent of striking gold.

Oakland, who began his career at Anshen + Allen (the architects behind Eichler’s earliest homes), was one of Eichler’s principal architects.

Listed at $1,700,000, the property at 1542 Campbell Ave. is a pristine example of California modernism.

Sitting on a nearly 9,000-square-foot lot, the 2,000-square-foot home offers four bedrooms and two bathrooms.

“Eichler perfected California modernism and wanted to create a world where high-end design was more accessible,” listing agent Nina Kurtz tells Realtor.com. “He wanted to develop a lived experience for his buyers that really takes advantage of the indoor-outdoor lifestyle that California has to offer.”

Originally built in 1964 and completely restored in recent years, the one-story house features thoughtful upgrades. The Eichler bones remain: post-and-beam construction, radiant heated flooring, globe lighting, and an open-air atrium.

“The atrium is one of Eichler’s most distinctive designs and really brings nature to the center of the home,” says Kurtz. “It creates a private outdoor space that feels quite luxurious.”

Walls of glass dissolve the boundary between the interior and exterior, which includes a refinished pool and a lush garden.

“The backyard is also expressed as an extension of the living space,” Kurtz notes. “The walls of glass windows create an inviting feel to the outdoor space, which inspires sunny summer gatherings and relaxing evening swims.”

The kitchen features sleek cabinetry from Able + Baker, as well as new countertops, appliances, and fixtures. The bathrooms carry the same aesthetic, with subtle updates.

The current owner went to great lengths to preserve the integrity of the architecture while bringing essential systems up to date, according to Kurtz.

“She spent a lot redoing the electrical panel, insulating the roof, and completely replastering the pool,” says Kurtz. “She also completely redid the kitchen and bathrooms with period-appropriate design.”

Though just 40 miles from Los Angeles, Thousand Oaks seems far removed from the city’s fast pace.

“Thousand Oaks is a beautiful Malibu-adjacent enclave that’s under an hour away from the hustle and bustle of Los Angeles,” says Kurtz.

The location is also hard to beat, with acclaimed schools, easy access to Wildwood Regional Park’s scenic trails, and neighborhood favorites like Tarantula Hill Brewing Co. and Basta Italian eatery all a short drive away.
