A megamansion built with embezzled funds by a former coal mining executive has hit the market in Billings, MT, for $26.9 million.

The mansion with a very scandalous past is currently the largest home for sale in Montana, at 30,843 square feet.

Construction on the estate began in 2014 by former owner and coal mining executive Larry Price Jr., who embezzled $20 million for the development. In 2018, Price faked his own kidnapping, telling FBI investigators he had been drugged and abducted by a Virginia motorcycle gang. He has since pleaded guilty and is serving a five-year federal prison sentence.

The home is now said to be owned by former mobile-home park owners, Jock and Cathy Clause, who purchased the 70-acre property in 2021. At the time, the property was listed for $11.5 million and then sold for $7.5 million.

“Everything was photographed just two weeks ago, so nothing has been staged,” listing agent Gregg ONeil, of Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices Floberg Real Estate, tells Realtor.com®.

“It has finally reached the level to which it was originally intended. Photographs circulating online at the time of the sale four years ago were virtually staged because the home was still under construction. At that time, the property lacked landscaping, finish work, and infrastructure.”

The luxurious stone chateau boasts every over-the-top amenity imaginable, including three pools (one indoor), a two-lane bowling alley, an indoor shooting range, a three-hole golf course, tennis and volleyball courts, a fully equipped fitness center, golf simulator, and home theater.

Custom-designed for grand-scale entertaining, the 10-bedroom mansion also has personal and commercial elevators, multiple indoor and outdoor kitchens, a wine cellar, 11 fireplaces, and a 14-car garage.

The “modern-day castle” is surrounded by hiking trails and has breathtaking views of Yellowstone County and the Beartooth Mountains.

“The 70-acre property is 15 minutes from Billings International Airport, so it could be a nice jumping-off point for all of Montana’s recreational opportunities,” ONeil notes. “30 additional acres are available adjacent to the property, and the compound backs up to 600 acres of state land. Furthermore, the estate is within striking distance of four ski resorts as well as trophy big game and bird hunting, plus fishing on the Yellowstone River which courses through the city. “

Billings serves as a gateway to Yellowstone National Park via the scenic mountain village of Red Lodge and the National Scenic Beartooth Pass Highway.

ONeil suspects the person who buys this property will be “an independent thinker,” who appreciates the remote location, luxurious amenities, and natural beauty in Montana’s largest city.
