La Crosse, Wisconsin, has made its mark on the Realtor.com® 2025 Hottest ZIP Codes list, spotlighting this Mississippi River city as one of the nation’s most competitive housing markets.

Each year, the rankings highlight ZIP codes where homes are selling faster than the U.S. average and attracting stronger-than-usual buyer interest.

In 2025, La Crosse’s 54601 ZIP code stood out, showing how smaller riverfront cities are gaining traction with buyers looking for affordability, lifestyle, and access.

La Crosse homes are moving fast

La Crosse ranked No. 44 nationally, with homes selling in a median of just 34 days between January and June 2025—nearly three weeks quicker than the U.S. median of 53 days. The typical listing price came in at $340,000, more than $100K below the June 2025 housing market data median of $441,000. That balance of affordability and speed helped push La Crosse into this year’s top 50 ZIP codes.

Wisconsin as a whole was well represented in the 2025 rankings. Waukesha (ZIP 53186) ranked highest at No. 14, with a $341,000 median and homes selling in just 28 days. Racine (ZIP 53402) came in at No. 30 with a $329,000 median and 29-day sales pace, while Sheboygan (ZIP 53083) placed No. 32 at $326,000 and 32 days on market. La Crosse’s $340K median puts it in line with its peers but adds the unique advantage of riverfront living and regional access.

The Midwest remains a buyer magnet

La Crosse’s inclusion underscores the Midwest’s dominance on the Hottest ZIP Codes list. Realtor.com’s regional breakdown shows the Midwest claiming multiple slots in the top 50, including Rockford, IL; Strongsville, OH; and Ballwin, MO. These markets continue to outperform coastal peers because they combine affordability with livability.

At $340,000, La Crosse is priced well below many national averages, while offering scenic amenities that make it attractive for a wide range of buyers. Its location along the Mississippi River, proximity to outdoor recreation, and cultural offerings tied to the University of Wisconsin–La Crosse all strengthen its draw. Many home shoppers are also using a mortgage calculator or home affordability calculator to plan purchases in value-driven markets like this one.

Suburban living with urban access

Realtor.com Chief Economist Danielle Hale notes that the hottest ZIP codes of 2025 all share a winning formula: suburban-style space and amenities with access to larger job hubs.

“These locations represent a sweet spot for shoppers who want suburban amenities and proximity to jobs without paying top-tier metro premiums,” Hale explains.

Nationally, the hottest ZIPs sold 30–42 days faster than the U.S. average and received 3.6× more listing views. Inventory remained tight, averaging nearly 59% below pre-pandemic levels. In La Crosse, that scarcity is translating into faster sales, with homes moving quickly despite being priced comfortably below the national norm. Buyers can prepare by exploring home loan options and understanding private mortgage insurance as part of the financing process.

La Crosse’s edge in 2025

With Waukesha, Racine, and Sheboygan also landing in the top 50, Wisconsin’s housing market is proving to be one of the strongest in the Midwest for housing demand.

La Crosse adds a river city to the mix, showing that buyers are increasingly considering lifestyle alongside price. For those preparing to move, a moving checklist can smooth the transition, while sellers can benefit from resources on selling a house and how much a home is worth.
