A stunning artist compound in Los Angeles originally created as the personal residence and home studio of famed artist Edward Ruscha has just hit the market for $4.65 million.

The 1.73-acre corner lot once contained two 1950s California ranch homes that were combined into one sprawling 6,350-square-foot residence. The compound features a primary residence, guesthouse, meditation studio, and a treehouse.

When it was featured in Architectural Digest back in 1994, the writer said Ruscha and his wife, Danna, bought the next-door neighbor’s house and decided to connect the two structures together by a living room. Ruscha’s former studio was later transformed into the guesthouse.

The Brentwood property is currently owned by film and commercial producer Rhea Scott, who has executive-produced music videos for artists from Janet Jackson and Madonna to Lauryn Hill and the Rolling Stones.

Inside, the midcentury dwelling now boasts vaulted ceilings, oversized windows, skylights, eye-catching hardwood floors, and four fireplaces. A spacious primary suite has French doors that open up to a poolside patio.

“The biggest thing about this home is its energy,” says listing agent Frank Langen of Deasy Penner & Partners. “The most incredible thing is that you feel like you’re not in the city at all, but you are just a 12-minute drive from Sunset.”

Since it was built in 1975, there have been only three owners.

“Ed Ruscha sold the home to a creative Hollywood couple and then it traded again about 15 years ago,” Langen says.

The open floor plan of the primary residence boasts three en-suite bedrooms, a modern farm-style kitchen with high-end appliances and access to a screened-in porch, and a “seductive” library with built-in bookcases.

While Langen believes it will likely be used as a primary residence, he says what’s so special is that the home makes you feel as though you’re always on vacation.

“It has always been someone creative who has owned it,” he says. “The current owner used it as a primary residence, raising kids there. It could also be a single person or a couple with grown kids or someone with young kids. It’s also large enough that you could buy it with a friend. It’s spacious enough to house two families.”

A treehouse and cacti gardens can also be found on the property.

Also found on the spacious lot surrounded by gardens and fountains are a beautiful kidney-shaped pool with diving board, a one-bedroom guesthouse, and a meditation studio.

“The blending of the landscape with the cacti gardens is really something,” he says. “It’s an energetically sublime compound where you feel like you are in nature. You really don’t need a second residence because it’s such a beautiful retreat that embodies grace, scale, and is very intimate.”

At $732 per square foot, the home is priced just right, according to Langen.

“The market is tricky right now, but this home is priced correctly,” he said.
